Triathlon Training Programme

The Team Phoenix programme is a six-month, supported journey for women who have had breast cancer, training together towards a super sprint triathlon.

We are based in North Kent and designed to be steady, supportive and non-competitive, with the emphasis on confidence, health and connection rather than performance.

Who the programme is for

This programme is for women who have had breast cancer and are looking for a supported way to rebuild confidence in their bodies after treatment. Many women join feeling uncertain about fitness, energy levels or what their bodies can now do. That uncertainty is expected. The programme is built to meet women where they are and support them as a group.

What matters most is a willingness to be part of a team, to train together, and to commit to the shared journey. This is not a competitive environment, and it is not about racing or comparison.

Finding Your Rhythm

Building fitness and confidence through shared progress

Your first 6 months

The programme runs for around six months, unfolding gradually as confidence and fitness develop. Training is introduced step by step and remains flexible, with individual needs taken into account while the group progresses together.

Triathlon activities that you will master

Swim

Swimming sessions begin in the pool, focusing on confidence and technique. You will have the opportunity to learn different strokes or improve the skills you have. As confidence grows, sessions progress towards open water when ready.

Bike

Cycling starts with safety, handling skills and confidence on the bike. Road cycling is introduced gradually, and weekend rides are very much social occasions - usually involving tea and cake, or breakfast.

Run

Running sessions are held weekly and are adapted to individual ability while maintaining the group environment. The focus is always on steady progress rather than pace.

Additional Support

Kit and Equipment

Training equipment is provided for the duration of the programme, including swimming training kit, a bike, helmet and wetsuit where needed. Participants are also given the coveted Pink 'Firebird' Team Phoenix T-shirt.

Physio check up

As part of the programme, we arrange a full physiotherapy review. This helps you understand how your body is moving now, what it’s capable of, and how to build strength and confidence safely as training progresses.

Wellbeing

Alongside training, we offer optional wellbeing sessions for those who wish to take part. These may include activities such as yoga, strength work or tai chi, providing additional ways to support physical and emotional wellbeing during the programme.

Completing the programme marks the end of the training journey, but not the end of being part of Team Phoenix. Those who complete the programme become Firebirds and remain part of the wider Team Phoenix community.

We continue to meet, train, volunteer, or support new programme participants in different ways over the years that follow. The connection does not end on race day.
